Memorial to Billy Souter

Billy Souter was a local legend, born and raised in Summerston. Billy loved Summerston, being there everyday delivering everyone’s newspapers for four decades which gained him numerous friends along the way. When Billy gave up his paper round they needed to employ four people to cover it! Along with this Billy spent many years volunteering with the Summerston Community Environmental Group litter picking, helping the community to preserve his beloved “Summy”. Along with this Billy volunteered at the local high school John Paul Academy as Janitor. A role that saw him become a much-admired role model for the kids who all say they will miss having him around, missing his cheeky sense of humour along with it. Billy filled his days with positive interactions such as playing dummy lines in the bookies, never gambling with money but for the chance of a great gab with people in there and the thrill of the races. Then to the Black Horse for the bingo, an occasion he never missed, along with having a shot on the karaoke. Billy loved nothing more than time with his auntie, cousins, friends and neighbours, who along with the community of Summerston will lament his passing everyday. We hope this bench in memoriam of Billy Souter will help all of us to remember Billy for decades to come and the positive and lasting impact he made on the fabric of the community of Summerston.

As his family noted at his funeral “heroes get remembered but legends never die”.

Words from his funeral

2 weeks ago our lives changed forever when we had to say goodbye to the legend that was
billy souter not just for us as a family but to the many extended friends and acquaintances
that billy made in his short but well lived 55 years.
billy always had a cheeky joke or a lug to burn, usually involving his trademark "toilet
humour" as auntie mary calls it.
but billy was a good soul a good laugh and a good man.
he lived a full and happy life and was loved by everyone, theres not many of us will get to
the end of our days and be able to say we had no enemies....billy can.
billy was like the big brother i never had as kids we would spend hours catching bees in a jam
jar or riding gary's chopper bike round and round the scheme or indeed listening to sinitta on
repeat for hours....poor auntie linda must have been demented .
we will never forget billy he was and always will be
the biggest character and usually the loudest laugh in the room.
billy leaves a lifetime of memories for us and for you so please today take a moment today to
share them.
in almost 4 decades of being the local paperboy in his beloved summy billy accumulated
friends easily his daily litter picking around the scheme seen him have a gab with many more.
often found at the bookies playing his dummy lines or the black horse having lunch playing
bingo or singing on the karaoke or his daily visits to the opticians all these things filled his
day and made billy happy.
i cant ever recall a day where he was sad it just wasn't him and a quality to be envied i think.
the years he spent doing his janny in jean paul 7 years of volenteering.in his local high
school.
he loved the kids, his years as a youth leader evident in the way the kids gravitated to him and
the good soul he was.
many times i watched the school kids crowd round at the chippy to say hi those kids will miss
him , our kids will miss him his naughty sense of humour that only he could get away with.
billy was a creature of habit he loved his routine and nothing stopped him even telling eddie
on the day he fell unwell that no bloody wind would keep him from his bingo that night.
billy liked to have his calender full dinners at our family homes overnight stays at the cousins
holidays all planned well in advance.his weekly facetimes to the aunties in america and
england and indeed springburn something he looked forward to and never missed
planning things months in advance
this year calling me in october to ask if 10th of december would be ok to deliver christmas
presents. i wont share my reply.
without him the lights a little duller and our lifes greatly altered he will be sorely missed and
never forgotten by all knew him
tell your stories love and laugh and try not to be sad.
billys life has ended far to soon but it is was a life well lived
billy is now back in the arms of his mum and dad and his wee brother gary
goodnight god bless billy boy
you were loved more than you will ever know.
heroes get remembered but legends never die.
